What can still cost money with commission-free trading?

Zero commission normally describes one eligible transaction charge, not every cost of using the account or owning an investment. FX conversion, spreads or markups, product charges, subscriptions, transfers, margin interest and statutory charges can still apply, depending on the broker, product, transaction and country.

Why this matters when choosing a broker

A headline commission is only one comparison field. A broker with a £0 or $0 eligible trade charge can still produce a different calculable cost once account behavior and product access are held constant.

The useful broker-selection question is therefore not simply whether a trade is commission-free, but which other charges are documented for the account and activity being compared.

Commission is narrower than total cost

Commission is a charge associated with executing a purchase or sale. A zero-commission offer can be limited by security, market, order channel, account, subscription tier or transaction type. It does not turn an absent or unpublished charge into zero.

  • Spread or markup: the difference embedded in transaction pricing can exist without a separately itemized commission.
  • Foreign exchange: buying an investment or receiving proceeds in another currency can trigger a conversion charge.
  • Investment-product charges: fund operating expenses are charged by the product and are distinct from a broker trade commission.
  • Account or subscription charges: platform, custody, inactivity or plan charges can recur even when eligible trades cost zero.
  • Transfers and closure: an outbound transfer or account closure can have its own charge.
  • Borrowing: a margin loan can accrue interest; zero commission does not mean zero borrowing cost.
  • Taxes and levies: a government or market charge can apply independently of a broker commission. This guide does not calculate tax or tell you how a tax rule applies.

US and UK schedules use different terms

United States: check the broker's detailed fee schedule and account agreement for the exact security, order route and account. FINRA notes that firms offering free trades can earn money through other charges and services; Investor.gov separately identifies transaction, ongoing, transfer and product-level costs.

United Kingdom: compare platform charges, dealing charges, foreign-exchange charges, exit charges and product costs separately. The FCA found that activity-based charges such as foreign exchange could be harder to locate and calls for clear, aggregated costs with a breakdown.

Compare the same dimensions for every broker

Mark unknown or excluded costs explicitly. Do not compare a complete schedule with a headline-only figure as if both had the same coverage.

Common mistakes and misinterpretations

  • Reading zero commission as a promise that the whole service is free.
  • Treating a missing fee as zero instead of unknown or not published.
  • Combining broker charges and investment-product charges without labeling each layer.
  • Comparing different markets, account types or order channels as if the fee conditions match.
  • Assuming that a lower modeled cost establishes suitability or a universal winner.

Key takeaways

  • Zero commission describes a defined charge, not the complete cost of investing.
  • Compare account, activity, FX, transfer and product costs on the same assumptions.
  • Use the official schedule and checked date to verify every material fee.
  • Unknown and excluded costs must remain visible rather than becoming zero.
